Dear Nobody,
Its the basic truth that rises out of a story which makes a novel universal.
- Chinua Achebe
That has quite a Woaw-Factor doesnt it? I sure was Waow-ed.
I am currently reading the world famous novel 'Things Fall Apart', and with impressive literature comes impressive context.
First of all the fact that Achebe had and was nothing when he wrote the book. Like many analists like to say: "He wrote this to right the wrongs that European novelists had caused."
Ofcourse, in a way, that is true.
"Untill the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter. I had to be that historian, so that the story of the hunt will also reflect the agony, the travail- the bravery, even, of the lions." - Achebe
However, when 'Things Fall Apart' was written, there was no guarantee that anyone, let alone western people, would ever read his words. Achebe wrote his literature because he wanted to tell this story. Because he wanted the audience to enjoy the story coated in culture and history.
During an interview, an auditor once asked: "What is the lesson you want to teach us?"
And Achebe replied with:
"Just enjoy the book. Identify with it or not. If you can, regocnize yourself in the characters, and enjoy!"
These words caused me to write this entry. Because it shares a truth, a truth to which I contribute, a truth that strikes me as a writer.
You see, sometimes novelists, authors, critiques, analists, we get so caught up in seeking meaning and moral we forget novels are written to Tell A Story. The story is taken to the maximum of the writers capacities and if they're reached: thats it.
A novel, before it becomes world famous and well known and people try to see the deep and double meanings, is just a story.
So read the story like it was written by a nobody. Because that is how the greatest of writers started off.
Feel free to marvel at the storyline without being forced to see through it all.
And Enjoy.
Enjoy because the story is worth enjoying.
We are all nobodies, which means we all have the potential to become a great writer.
I hope you enjoyed reading this.
Love,
Kim
